On Friday 28th November, Paul Johnson and Jordan James from the Wigan Warriors will be making guest appearances at Belong Atherton, to support customers, staff and friends of the village who are taking part in a sponsored static bike marathon. Members of the local community are invited to attend the event, which will take place from 11am until 2pm, to raise funds to buy additional specialist equipment for use in the gym at the care village. There will also be a raffle, cake and free drinks for attendees.
The static bike marathon will be led by Belong Atherton Fitness Instructor, Gilmour Zamudzandu, a former Atherton Town football player. One of the goals of the fundraising event is to purchase a SCIFIT cross trainer for the Belong Atherton gym, which is accessible to those in wheelchairs and proved extremely popular during a trial at the village.
Belong Atherton has an ongoing commitment to promote independence and good health for older people through exercise. Proven benefits of regular exercise include decreasing stiffness and pain, which in turn helps improve balance and coordination, making a huge difference to daily living and helping with falls prevention.
Julie Washington, Belong Atherton General Manager, says of the sponsored event: "We see proof of the benefits of regular exercise constantly at Belong Atherton, both in our residents and the increasing number of people using our services from the local community. After receiving advice from health professionals and requests from a number of our gym users, we're hoping to raise enough money to buy a very specialised piece of equipment to enhance the service that we can offer to older people."
