A 98-year-old former teacher, Flo Floate, whose health had declined following a hip operation earlier this year, has re-gained her independence and learned how to walk again, thanks to the help of staff at Belong Crewe.
Flo has been a resident at Belong Crewe for the past three years and has enjoyed living there. Combined with being partially sighted, her hip operation put her in a low mood and knocked her confidence when attempting to move independently.
However, within a month of following an exercise programme at Belong Crewe, Flo is able to bear weight again and move around her room by herself. The exercise programme was tailor-made by Belong Crewe’s professionally trained gym instructor, using the village’s exercise studio that is fully fitted with machinery suitable for older people.
Flo’s daughter, said: “Since leaving hospital and going back to Belong Crewe, mum’s muscle strength, balance, stamina and general well-being has much improved, thanks to the exercise programme provided by the village.”
Exercise instructor, Chris Ryder, added: “Working with Flo has been very enjoyable as she has a great sense of humour and has gained a very positive attitude. Her fitness achievements are by no means unique at Belong Crewe as we strive to improve residents’ health, fitness and well-being every day.”
Belong places significant emphasis on physical exercise and the contribution this makes to residents’ health and overall wellbeing. Exercise studios are designed into the planning of new Belong villages, and these are run by qualified fitness instructors, whose service is available both to residents and members of the wider community.
