Why did you decide to take up a job in the care sector?
I didn’t actually start in the care sector, believe it or not! My first job with Belong was as a temporary receptionist here in the Wigan care village, where I was working about one shift a week. Then they advertised for a permanent position so I applied and got the job, and later down the line I was employed as an Experience Day Support Worker before my recent appointment as Experience Coordinator. You don’t realise how rewarding working in the care sector is until you do it; I get so much out of my job because I can see the difference I’m making.
What do you most look forward to about this job?
I’m look forward to getting to know each resident individually. Before this appointment, I would see everyone during the village activities but only as a group. Now, I know all of our 67 residents by name!
What are the most challenging aspect of this job?
I’d say the main challenge as an experience coordinator is making sure you can think on your feet. We work really hard to organise activities that suit as many of our customers as possible, and it always pays off.
What do you think makes working for Belong unique?
What makes Belong different from anywhere else is that it’s a community. Through all the facilities that each village offers, I work with cooks, hairdressers, beauticians, and physical trainers, in addition to the tenants and care staff. It’s like one big family.
What’s your favourite way to relax after long day (or night) at work?
I like to spend time with my family and friends when I’m not working. Because I work from 8am to 5pm, my evenings and weekends are precious. Sometimes if I’ve had a long day with lots of talking, I just like to switch off and scroll through Facebook!
