Nathan Harrison, 30, who lives in Crewe town centre, has been appointed to the role of Fitness Instructor at Belong Crewe, where he is launching a specialist exercise service for older people. Nathan works with individuals living in Belong Crewe to improve their mobility and fitness, using specialist equipment in the village Exercise Studio.
Speaking of his work at Belong, Nathan said: "I have qualifications in personal training and sports massage from Mid Cheshire College, but it wasn't until I went to university that I really got the fitness bug. I took up weight training and boxing and haven't looked back since. Since then I've worked as a fitness trainer and private coach, with some excellent results, but I wanted use what I'd learned to help people and give something back. The service here is really taking off and it's exciting to see the improvement in people using the facilities."
Ray Knott, who lives in Belong Crewe said: “The exercise service has been a great benefit to me since opening. It helps people like me to stay mobile and active. I think everybody should use it."
Working alongside GPs and other health professionals, Nathan creates personalised exercise plans to help older people stay active and independent through exercise. Proven benefits of regular exercise include decreasing stiffness and pain, which in turn helps improve balance and coordination, making a huge difference to the daily lives of people in Belong Crewe, and helping with falls prevention. Associated benefits also include lower blood pressure, improved memory, sleep patterns and mood. Regular exercise has also been proven to reduce the risk of the onset of dementia.
The Belong Crewe exercise service is modelled on Belong's award-winning 'Independence through Exercise' programme in Macclesfield, which won global recognition in the 2013 Excellence in Ageing Awards, run by the International Association of Homes and Services for the Ageing (IAHSA).
