Plenty of fresh air and the occasional drop of whisky in your tea is the secret to long life according to centenarian Madeline Nicholls, a resident at Belong Crewe, who recently celebrated her 100th birthday with a party at the village.
Madeline celebrated her centenary surrounded by family, fellow residents and well-wishers at a party organised by staff at Belong Crewe, where she took the opportunity to show off her card from The Queen.
Born and raised in Derbyshire, Madeline grew up surrounded by the countryside and loved to walk the Derbyshire hills. She married husband Arthur in 1945 and together they moved to Crewe after Madeline completed her teacher training, where she later taught at Brierly Street school.
Her love of the outdoors was an enduring passion, and over her life Madeline explored many of the great British walking spots across the country. She moved into Belong Crewe in 2012 and remains very active, getting involved with gardening, cooking and baking, as well as keeping up her fitness with two Oomph! exercise sessions each week.
Lee Edwards, Activity Co-ordinator at Belong Crewe, commented: “Madeline is a very active member of the Belong community and always gets involved in the activities we run here at the village. She is a wonderful ambassador for Belong and shows that age is no reason to not live an active and meaningful life. We are delighted to have Madeline here at Belong Crewe and we’d all like to wish her a very happy birthday.”
