Leigh resident, Amy Hirst, recently celebrated her 100th birthday, at a very special party with friends and family at Belong Atherton on Mealhouse Lane.
Born in 1913, Amy Hirst attended Leigh Parish school as a girl, and has lived in Leigh all of her life. She first travelled abroad after the war in 1947, long before package holidays made travelling so easy, and travelled extensively with her lifelong friend, Edith Bains. Amy has visited most European countries, and found that Switzerland was her favourite place to visit. After working in Courtaulds, Tillie & Henderson and Fosters on Leigh Rd, Amy retired at the age of 62, and continued to travel for some time afterwards.
According to her nephew, Malcom Hirst, Amy would say that the secret to long life is that she never smoked, never drank and never worried about anything. Staff at Belong Atherton, where she now lives, report that Amy loves animals and has a brilliant sense of humour, always cracking jokes with those around her.
Belong Atherton General Manager, Julie Washington, said: “We were thrilled to help Amy celebrate such a momentous occasion. Her friends all visited from Leigh Baptist Church, and we made up a room for relatives that had travelled from Cornwall to stay at Belong Atherton for the party. We all hope that Amy will enjoy many more birthdays in the village.”
