Town flocks to Belong Crewe community day celebrations

Belong Crewe played host to over 20 community organisations to celebrate being selected as a ‘Connected Communities Centre’, meaning it is now officially a venue for a range of additional events designed to engage local people.
The village saw between 100 and 150 members of the public over the course of the day, who enjoyed the many indoor and outdoor activities including music by Crewe Brass Band, an ice cream van, stalls selling handbags and jewellery, and tombola. There was also an array of exotic world food served up as part of the NAPA (National Activity Providers Association) Challenge 2018, the theme of which was ‘a food journey around the Commonwealth’.
The Mayor of Crewe, Councillor Diane Yates, was amongst those in attendance from the council, as well as Councillor Janet Clowes, cabinet member for adult social care and integration, who unveiled the Connected Community Centre plaque with experience coordinator Natalie Ravenscroft.



The event took nine months of planning with all the local services that took part, such as the police and fire brigades, Cheshire’s older LGBT network ‘Silver Rainbows’, and Diabetes UK to name a few. Resident Eveline Perks particularly enjoyed meeting the fire brigade and trying on their special jackets, revealing that she had in fact been a fire fighter herself: “It must be more than 60 years since I last put on this jacket. It was the women who put out those big fires during the war, and I am proud to say that I was one of them!”
The Connected Communities scheme is organised by Cheshire East Council and details of upcoming events are published on its Live Well community information website.
