National care award winner Caroline Newton, former lead senior support worker at Belong Atherton, has been appointed to the post of experience coordinator, where she will be responsible for developing and implementing a programme of interactive and innovative activities for customers and the wider local community.
Caroline joined Belong five years ago, as a senior support worker in the Atherton village’s households and became lead senior support worker in 2015. Her move into experience coordination coincides with her study for the diploma in leadership for health and social care level 5. She was inspired to take on the role having witnessed the benefits customers and residents gained from activities and creative experiences.
Last year, at the annual National Activity Provider Association (NAPA) gala, Caroline won the award for ‘best carer who contributes to activity provision’. One of Caroline’s colleagues had noticed her commitment to customers in the households and her enthusiasm when organising innovative experiences, so nominated her for the prestigious award.
Originally from Wigan, Caroline resides in Atherton with her husband and two children. After attending Hesketh Fletcher School, she found her way into the care sector at the age of 17 and went from working in an adults’ learning disabilities centre in Wigan to a nursing home in Culcheth. Whilst bringing up her children, Caroline worked in retail and later joined the CLS care group in Leigh before moving to Belong in 2014.
Commenting on her appointment, Caroline Newton said: “I am thrilled to take on the role as experience coordinator. Even as a young girl, when my grandma was poorly I wanted to look after her, so perhaps I’ve always had a calling. And I am looking forward to providing a high standard of care to make all customers smile through stimulating activities.”
Nicola Johnstone, support manager at Belong Atherton, said of Caroline’s appointment: “We are thrilled that Caroline will be in charge of organising events for our residents. Her NAPA award last year is a tribute to her dedication to our customers, and we look forward to seeing what new activities she will implement.”
